Visa rules change often, are described inconsistently, and are frequently relayed second hand by people with an incentive to sound authoritative. Knowing how to check them yourself is more valuable than any summary, including this one.
Go to the primary source, always
The authoritative source is the government of the country you are travelling to: its official visa portal, or the embassy or consulate covering where you live. Everything else is a summary that may be out of date, including travel agents, aggregator sites and news coverage.
Where an official online application system exists, it is usually the definitive statement of what is currently required, because it will not let you proceed without the right documents.
Understand which category applies to you
- Visitor or tourist. Usually the simplest, and normally prohibits working.
- Business visitor. Meetings and conferences, not employment.
- Work. Almost always requires employer sponsorship arranged before travel.
- Transit. Sometimes required even without leaving the airport, depending on nationality and terminal.
- Religious or seasonal categories. Some countries operate distinct schemes with their own quotas, seasons and agents.
Applying under the wrong category is a common cause of refusal, and a refusal is recorded and must usually be declared on future applications, including to other countries.
The documentation traps
Passport validity is the most frequent problem: many countries require six months of validity beyond your intended departure, so a passport valid for the trip can still be rejected. Blank pages are sometimes required. Bank statements often need to cover a defined period and show a maintained balance rather than a recent deposit, which is why last-minute transfers into an account can hurt rather than help.
Where documents must be attested or translated, the requirement usually names which body must do it. An attestation from the wrong authority is treated as no attestation.
Why agent advice is so often wrong
Agents work from experience of previous applications, and rules change without announcement. An agent describing what worked last year may be describing a superseded process. Use agents for logistics if you wish, and verify the requirements themselves against the official source.
Common questions
Does an approved visa guarantee entry? No. Border officers make the final decision on arrival in almost every country.
How far ahead should I apply? Earlier than feels necessary. Processing times vary seasonally and published estimates are averages, not commitments.
Can I work on a visitor visa? Generally no, and doing so risks deportation and future bans. Remote work for a foreign employer sits in a grey area that differs by country.
What if my application is refused? Ask for the reason where the system provides one, fix the underlying issue, and declare the refusal on future applications. Concealing it is treated far more seriously than the original refusal.
