UK ETA in 2026: Who Needs One and 5 Mistakes to Avoid

UK ETA Explained: Who Needs One and How to Apply

The UK ETA is now a hard requirement for most visa-free visitors, and it is enforced at the airline gate rather than at the UK border. Without one you are not refused entry on arrival; you are refused boarding, which is a considerably worse place to discover the problem.

UK ETA: quick answers
The three questions this article answers most directly.

What the UK ETA is

An Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital permission to travel, linked to your passport. It is not a visa and it does not guarantee entry: a Border Force officer still makes that decision on arrival. What it does is move the screening earlier, so people who would be refused are identified before they fly.

Enforcement began on 25 February 2026, and the scheme covers nationals of roughly 85 countries who previously travelled to the UK visa-free.

Who needs one

You need a UK ETA if you do not require a visa for short visits and do not already hold UK immigration status. In practice that covers most visitors from Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, the Gulf states and many others, travelling for up to six months.

  • You do not need one if you already hold a UK visa, or have settled or pre-settled status, or a UK residence permit.
  • British and Irish citizens do not need one, and Irish residents are generally exempt under the Common Travel Area arrangements.
  • Children need their own, including infants. There is no family application, and this catches people out constantly.
  • Transit usually requires one. This is the most commonly missed case. Passing through a UK airport frequently needs an ETA even if you never leave the airport, so check your specific routing rather than assuming.

How long it lasts

An approved UK ETA is valid for two years, or until your passport expires if that comes first. It permits multiple trips within that period. Because it is tied to the passport, renewing your passport means applying again, which is worth remembering if a renewal is due.

How to apply

  1. Use the official UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website. Search results are crowded with third-party services charging several times the official fee for filling in the same form.
  2. Have your passport, a payment card and a phone camera ready. The application asks for a photograph and basic biographical and suitability questions.
  3. Apply well ahead. Most decisions arrive within minutes to a few hours, and the official guidance allows up to three working days, so leave a margin.
  4. Check the passport number on the confirmation against the passport you will actually travel on. A mismatch is the single most common reason for problems at the gate.

There is nothing to print or carry. Approval is linked electronically to the passport, and the airline checks it automatically. Keeping the confirmation email is still sensible, purely as evidence if something goes wrong.

The mistakes that stop people boarding

  • Applying with a different passport from the one carried, usually after a renewal or for dual nationals.
  • Assuming transit is exempt. It usually is not.
  • Forgetting children. Every traveller needs an individual authorisation.
  • Leaving it to the airport. Approval is normally fast and is not guaranteed to be, and applications can be referred for further checks.
  • Using an unofficial site, which costs more and sometimes produces nothing at all.

If you are travelling from a country whose visa requirements you are unsure about, our guide to reading visa requirements covers how to interpret official guidance without relying on third-party summaries, which is the same discipline that keeps you away from the overpriced application sites.

How it fits the wider picture

The UK ETA is part of a general move toward pre-travel screening. The United States has ESTA, Canada has eTA, and the EU is introducing ETIAS alongside its new Entry/Exit System. The pattern is consistent: countries want to know who is coming before the aircraft doors close rather than when someone reaches the desk.

For travellers the practical consequence is a new item on the pre-trip checklist that did not exist a few years ago, and one that cannot be resolved at the airport. Our travel tech checklist covers the rest of what is worth sorting before you leave.

What it costs and how to avoid overpaying

The official fee is modest and is charged once for a two year authorisation covering multiple trips, which works out cheaply across several visits. The expense people actually incur comes from elsewhere.

  • Third-party application sites charge a service fee on top of the official cost, sometimes several times over, for completing a form you can complete yourself in ten minutes. They are legal and they are poor value.
  • Sites that are not application services at all collect your passport details and payment card and deliver nothing. Passport data is worth stealing on its own.
  • Applying twice after forgetting an existing valid authorisation, which is easy given the two year term.

The rule that avoids all three: reach the application only through GOV.UK or the official app, never through a search advertisement. If a site ranks above the government one, that is a purchased position rather than an endorsement.

If your application is refused

Refusals are uncommon for ordinary tourists and they do happen, usually where there is a previous immigration breach, a relevant criminal record, or a discrepancy in the information supplied. A refusal is not a ban: it means you now need to apply for a visitor visa instead, which is a longer process with a decision made by a caseworker rather than an automated check. The practical lesson is to apply weeks rather than days before travelling, because a refusal discovered late leaves no time for the alternative route.

Common questions

Who needs a UK ETA? Nationals of around 85 visa-free countries travelling to the UK for up to six months, who do not already hold a UK visa or immigration status. Children need their own, and airport transit usually requires one too.

How long is a UK ETA valid? Two years, or until your passport expires if sooner, with multiple trips allowed in that period. Renewing your passport means applying again.

How long does approval take? Often minutes, though official guidance allows up to three working days and some applications are referred for further checks. Do not leave it until the day of travel.

Does a UK ETA guarantee entry? No. It is permission to travel, not permission to enter. A Border Force officer still decides at the border, exactly as before.
