The MacBook Pro M6 price starts at $1,999 in the United States. That number is accurate and slightly misleading, because it describes one configuration at the bottom of a line that reaches several thousand dollars higher. This guide sorts out what you are actually choosing between.
Updated October 2026. Prices and configurations change, so check the manufacturer pages linked at the end before you buy anything.

The headline MacBook Pro M6 price
Apple published two figures on announcement day:
- $1,999 for the 14 inch MacBook Pro with M6.
- $1,899 with education pricing, which applies to students and staff at eligible institutions.
Apple also offers a lease. Its own page quotes from $38.99 a month over 36 months, and a separate example of $53.99 a month over 24 months, both excluding tax and any trade-in credit.
A lease is not a discount. Over 36 months, $38.99 a month comes to a little over $1,400, and at the end of it you do not own the laptop. It is a cash flow tool, which is useful, but it is worth being clear about what it is.
What $1,999 actually buys
Apple financing example on its own site describes a 14 inch MacBook Pro with 16GB at a purchase price of $1,999. So the entry configuration is:
- A 12 core CPU and a 12 core GPU.
- 16GB of unified memory, running at 153GB/s.
- A 14.2 inch Liquid Retina XDR screen.
- Three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, MagSafe 3, an SDXC slot and a headphone jack.
That is a complete machine. Nothing in it is a trap. The question is only whether the two upgrades Apple offers are worth their cost to you.
The memory upgrade is the one that matters
The MacBook Pro M6 can be configured to 24GB or 32GB of unified memory. Apple does not publish the upgrade prices on the pages read for this article, so check the configure screen in the store.
What Apple does publish is the thing most buyers miss. The 16GB model runs its memory at 153GB/s. The 24GB and 32GB models run at 170GB/s. You are buying capacity and speed in one step.
If you only browse, write and edit photos, 16GB is genuinely enough. If you run local AI models, keep dozens of browser tabs open alongside a virtual machine, or work with large video projects, the step up pays for itself quickly.
Where the MacBook Pro M6 price sits in the line
The M6 model is the floor of the MacBook Pro range, not the floor of the Mac laptop range. Above it, Apple sells the same body with far more capable chips.
- M5 Pro. Up to an 18 core CPU and a 20 core GPU, 24GB to 64GB of memory, 307GB/s of bandwidth, Thunderbolt 5.
- M5 Max. An 18 core CPU with a 32 or 40 core GPU, 36GB to 128GB of memory, 460GB/s or 614GB/s of bandwidth.
- PROLED XDR models. The tandem OLED touchscreen machines, in 14.2 inch and 16.3 inch sizes, using M5 Pro or M5 Max.
Apple pages read for this article do not list prices for the 16 inch Liquid Retina models or for the PROLED models. MacRumors reported the touch models starting at $2,899 for the 14 inch and $3,399 for the 16 inch. That is a report, not an Apple figure, and it is worth treating as one until Apple publishes it.
The cheaper Mac that most people should consider
If the MacBook Pro M6 price feels high, the honest alternative is a MacBook Air with M5. Apple does not list Air prices on the pages read here either, but the Air has historically started several hundred dollars below the Pro.
What you give up is specific rather than vague:
- A 500 nit LED screen instead of a 1600 nit peak mini-LED one.
- Two Thunderbolt 4 ports instead of three, and no HDMI or card slot.
- Up to 18 hours of video streaming instead of 24.
- No fan, which means quiet operation but less sustained performance.
For a student, a writer or anyone whose heaviest task is a video call with twenty tabs open, the Air is the better value and it is not close.

Three ways the MacBook Pro M6 price comes down
None of these is a trick. All three are ordinary and all three are real money.
- Education pricing. $1,899 instead of $1,999, if you qualify.
- Trade-in. Apple credits an old machine against the new one. The amount depends on model and condition.
- Waiting. Retailers discount Macs through the year even when Apple does not. A model launched in November is usually available below list price somewhere by the following spring.
The one thing that does not work is waiting for the next chip. There is always a next chip, and the gap between generations is now smaller than the gap between configurations.
What the competition charges
For context, Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599.99, which is six hundred dollars above the MacBook Pro M6 price. The mainstream Surface Laptop line starts at $1,199.99 for the 13 inch model, $1,399.99 for 13.8 inch and $1,699.99 for 15 inch.
So the MacBook Pro M6 sits above the mainstream Windows laptops and below the halo one. Our Surface Laptop Ultra price breakdown goes through the Windows side in the same detail.
Is the MacBook Pro M6 price fair
Fair is a judgement, so here is the evidence rather than the verdict.
At $1,999 you get a mini-LED screen with a million to one contrast ratio, 24 hours of video playback, a chip Apple claims has the fastest CPU core available, three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI and a card slot. Windows laptops at the same price rarely have all of those at once.
What you do not get at that price is memory headroom, Thunderbolt 5, a touch screen or a 16 inch panel. Each of those pushes you into a more expensive model, and for some buyers one of them is not optional.
A simple way to decide
Work down this list and stop at the first yes.
- Need more than 32GB of memory, or a 16 inch screen? Buy an M5 Pro or M5 Max model.
- Want to touch the screen? Buy a PROLED model and expect to pay well above $2,599.
- Run local AI models or heavy video? Buy the M6 with 24GB or 32GB.
- Everything else, and you want the better screen and ports? The $1,999 M6.
- Everything else, and the budget is the point? A MacBook Air with M5.
Storage is the upgrade nobody budgets for
Memory gets all the attention because Apple attaches a bandwidth figure to it. Storage quietly costs more over the life of the machine, because it is the one thing that cannot be worked around.
Unified memory can be managed. Close some applications and the machine copes. A full drive stops you doing the thing you sat down to do, and on a soldered SSD there is no later fix.
A reasonable rule: look at how full your current laptop is, double it, and buy that. If you are at 400GB today, a 512GB machine will frustrate you inside two years.

The costs that are not on the price tag
The MacBook Pro M6 price is the start of the number, not the end of it. Four things routinely add to it.
- Adapters. There is no USB-A port. A hub costs real money and most people buy one within a month.
- AppleCare. Optional, and the calculation is simple: compare its cost against what a screen or logic board repair costs out of warranty.
- An external drive. Either for backup, which you should have, or for storage you decided not to buy up front.
- Sales tax. Apple quoted lease figures exclude it, and so does the headline price.
None of these is a scandal. They are simply the difference between a price and a budget, and the gap is usually two to three hundred dollars.
What the machine is worth later
Resale value is the part of the MacBook Pro M6 price that most people never count, and it changes the comparison with Windows laptops more than any specification does.
Macs have historically held value better than comparable Windows machines, partly because the line-up is small and predictable, and partly because macOS supports older hardware for a long time. A laptop that sells for half its price after three years has effectively cost you half its price.
That is a reason to buy a configuration other people will want. A 16GB entry machine is harder to sell in 2029 than a 24GB one, and the gap in resale is often close to the gap in upgrade cost.
Refurbished, and when it makes sense
Apple sells refurbished Macs with the same warranty as new ones, at a discount that is usually meaningful rather than dramatic.
The catch with a machine launched this month is supply. Refurbished stock comes from returns, so there will be very few MacBook Pro M6 units until well into 2027. What will be available is the previous generation.
That is not a bad outcome. An M5 Pro machine at a refurbished price offers more memory, more bandwidth and Thunderbolt 5, for work that needs those things more than it needs the newest chip.
What to do with the laptop you are replacing
Three routes, in rough order of how much money they return.
- Sell it privately. Most money, most effort, and you must wipe it properly first.
- Trade it in. Less money, almost no effort, and the credit comes straight off the new purchase.
- Keep it as a second machine. An older laptop makes a good home server, a travel machine you would not mind losing, or a spare for someone in the house.
Whatever you choose, sign out of your accounts and erase the drive before it leaves your hands. On an Apple silicon Mac that is a menu item in System Settings, not a procedure.

How to think about the price gap with Windows
A $1,999 MacBook Pro and a $1,199.99 Surface Laptop are not the same purchase, and the eight hundred dollar gap is not a straight premium.
The MacBook has a mini-LED screen reaching 1600 nits, three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, a card slot and 24 hours of quoted video playback. The Surface has a touchscreen, a USB-A port, 22.5 hours of quoted video playback at the small size, and runs Windows.
Which is better value depends entirely on whether you need Windows, and on how much a very good screen is worth to you. Neither answer is wrong.
Three price mistakes people make
These come up every launch, and each one costs real money.
- Buying the entry configuration to save now. Memory and storage cannot be added later, so saving two hundred dollars today can mean replacing the machine a year earlier.
- Buying the top configuration out of caution. The opposite error, and more expensive. Find out what you actually use before paying for 32GB you will never fill.
- Comparing the headline price with a Windows laptop headline price. One of them includes a mini-LED screen and 24 hours of quoted video playback. Compare configurations, not starting figures.
The underlying point is that a laptop price is only meaningful next to a specification, and the specification you should price is the one you will actually order.
When the MacBook Pro M6 price is the wrong question
Sometimes the honest answer is that no configuration of this machine fits, and it is worth recognising that early.
If you need more than 32GB of memory, every dollar spent here is spent in the wrong part of the line. If you need a 16 inch screen, the same applies. And if your work is writing, browsing and video calls, a MacBook Air does all of it quietly for less.
Buying the right category matters more than optimising the price within the wrong one, and that is the mistake this launch is most likely to produce.
The short version
Everything above, in five lines.
- The MacBook Pro M6 price starts at $1,999, or $1,899 for education.
- The entry machine has 16GB of memory at 153GB/s.
- The 24GB and 32GB upgrades also raise bandwidth to 170GB/s.
- Touch and 16 inch models cost considerably more, and Apple has not published those prices.
- A MacBook Air with M5 remains the better value for ordinary work.
Common questions
What is the starting MacBook Pro M6 price? $1,999 in the United States, and $1,899 with education pricing. Apple also offers a lease from $38.99 a month over 36 months.
Is the memory upgrade worth it? For local AI work, heavy video or many open applications, yes, because the 24GB and 32GB options also raise memory bandwidth from 153GB/s to 170GB/s. For browsing and writing, 16GB is enough.
How much is the touchscreen MacBook Pro? Apple has not published a price on the pages checked here. MacRumors reported $2,899 for the 14 inch and $3,399 for the 16 inch, which is a report rather than an Apple figure.
Is the MacBook Pro M6 cheaper than a Surface Laptop Ultra? Yes. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599.99, which is $600 above the MacBook Pro M6 price.
Should I wait for a price drop? Retailers usually discount Macs within a few months of launch, so waiting can save money. Waiting for the next chip rarely does, because the next chip is always coming.
