How it works

The code encodes a short piece of structured text in the format WIFI:T:WPA;S:network;P:password;;. Both iOS and Android recognise it in the standard camera app and offer to join, so nobody needs to install anything.

This is generated on your device. The password never leaves your browser and is not sent anywhere.

Print it for guests

Download the SVG rather than the PNG if you are printing it — SVG is vector, so it stays sharp at any size, from a table card to a poster.

One warning worth stating plainly: the password is readable inside the code by anyone who scans it. That is the whole point, but it does mean a code taped to a shop window is the same as writing the password on the window. For a business, put guests on a separate guest network rather than the one your till runs on.

How this is worked out

The code encodes a short structured string — WIFI:T:WPA;S:network;P:password;; — which iOS and Android both recognise in the standard camera app. There is no app to install and no third party involved: the string is built and encoded on your own device.

Common questions

Does this work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Both recognise the format in the built-in camera. iOS has since version 11 and Android since 10.

Can people see my password?

Anyone who scans the code gets the password — that is how joining works. Treat a printed code as equivalent to writing the password down. For a business, put guests on a separate guest network.

Does it expire?

No. The code is static, so it works until you change the network password.

What if my network name has special characters?

They are escaped automatically. Semicolons, colons, commas and backslashes are all handled.
