The short answer is that it depends which iPhone 18 you mean, and this year that is not a pedantic distinction. Apple has split the lineup across two launches for the first time since 2017. The premium models arrive in September 2026. The standard iPhone 18 is not expected until the first quarter of 2027.

The two dates
- September 2026: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a first foldable, widely reported as the iPhone Ultra. Apple has confirmed an event on 9 September 2026 at 10am Pacific, titled “Surprise and shine”. Pre-orders are reported for 11 or 12 September, with phones in shops around 18 September.
- Early 2027: the standard iPhone 18, the cheaper iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air. Apple’s manufacturing partner Pegatron placed all three in the first quarter of 2027 on its Q2 2026 earnings call, which is about as close to confirmation as this gets before Apple says it.
So if you are waiting for the phone that will be called simply “iPhone 18”, you are waiting until roughly March 2027, not this month. If you are waiting for the best iPhone Apple makes, that is the 18 Pro, and it is days away.
Why Apple split the launch
The reported reason is supply, not strategy for its own sake. Memory chips and custom silicon have been tight, and when a component is scarce a manufacturer sends it to the product with the highest margin first. That is the Pro line. The standard models wait for supply to loosen.
This has a knock-on effect worth knowing about before you buy: the same memory shortage is reported to be pushing prices up on the Pro models rather than down. A shortage that delays the cheap phone tends to make the expensive one more expensive too.
What we do not know yet
The iPhone Air 2 timing is genuinely unsettled. Most reporting groups it with the spring 2027 wave, but at least one outlet has said it is back on track for 2026. Those cannot both be right, and nobody outside Apple currently knows which is.
Exact spring dates are also guesswork. “First quarter of 2027” is a supplier’s phrasing, not a date on an invitation. Apple has used late February and March for spring launches before, so that is the sensible expectation, but it is an expectation and not a schedule.
What this means if you are buying
If you need a phone now, the honest answer is that waiting for the standard iPhone 18 means waiting roughly six months. That is a long time to spend on an aging handset for a model whose specifications are not yet public.
If you want a Pro, waiting a week to see the 18 Pro costs you nothing, and even if you decide against it the iPhone 17 Pro typically drops in price once its replacement is on stage.
