The World Series 2026 is the final round of Major League Baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers are in it for the first time since 1982. If you are not a regular baseball watcher, here are six things that make the whole thing make sense.
Updated October 2026. The American League side was still being decided when this was written, so check the official bracket for the latest.

1. What the World Series actually is
Baseball in America is split into two halves, called the American League and the National League. They play almost the whole season apart. The World Series is where the champion of each half finally meets.
It is a best of seven. The first team to win four games wins the title. If one team wins the first four, it ends there, and the last three games are never played.
2. How the Brewers got there
Milwaukee beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, the round before the final. They won it in a sweep, meaning they took four games straight and the Dodgers won none.
That is a big deal for two reasons. The Dodgers were the defending champions, so they were the team to beat. And Milwaukee had not reached a World Series since 1982, which is 44 years.
3. Why Milwaukee plays at home first
The schedule uses a pattern called 2-3-2. It works like this:
- Games 1 and 2 at the first team ground.
- Games 3, 4 and 5 at the other team ground.
- Games 6 and 7 back at the first team ground.
The team with the better record across the regular season gets the first slot, which means four possible home games instead of three. Milwaukee earned that, so they open at home.
4. The dates
Game 1 is Friday 23 October. Game 2 follows on Saturday 24 October. The series then moves for games 3, 4 and 5 on 26, 27 and 28 October. If it goes the full distance, games 6 and 7 are on 30 and 31 October back in Milwaukee.
Games 5, 6 and 7 only happen if they are needed. If someone wins four first, the rest are cancelled.
5. Where to watch it
In the United States the games are on Fox. Outside the US it varies by country, and rights change from season to season, which is why the answer is never the same twice. Our guides to streaming live sport and how streaming rights work explain why one match can be on three different services depending where you are sitting.

6. A few words that will confuse you otherwise
Baseball has its own vocabulary. These four come up constantly during the World Series 2026 coverage:
- Inning. One round of play. A game has nine, and both teams bat in each one.
- Sweep. Winning every game in a series without losing one.
- Pennant. The title you win by being champion of your league. Winning the pennant is what gets you into the World Series.
- Home advantage. Playing more games at your own ground, decided here by regular season record.
That is really all you need to follow it. Four wins takes the title, the better regular season record opens at home, and a sweep means someone did not win at all.
How teams reach the World Series 2026
The final is the end of a run of knockout rounds. Working backwards, it goes like this:
- Regular season. Months of games that decide who qualifies and who has the better record.
- Wild Card round. A short series for the lower qualifiers.
- Division Series. Best of five.
- Championship Series. Best of seven, one in each league. Winning this is what Milwaukee did to the Dodgers.
- World Series. Best of seven between the two league champions.
Each round gets longer, which is deliberate. A short series can be won by a team having a lucky week. A best of seven is much harder to win by luck alone.
Why a sweep is harder than it sounds
Beating a team four times in a row is rare at this level, and it is rarer still against the defending champions. In baseball even the best teams lose a good share of their games, because a single pitcher having a strong night can decide one game on its own.
That is also why you should not read a sweep as proof that the final will be one sided. Momentum is a story people tell afterwards. Each series starts level.
What to watch for if you are new to it
You do not need every rule to enjoy a final. Three things carry most of the drama, and spotting them makes the whole thing easier to follow.
- The starting pitcher. One player throws to almost every batter early on, so how he is doing shapes the first half of the game.
- Runners on base. The more runners waiting, the more a single hit can swing the score.
- The later innings. Teams bring on fresh pitchers near the end, and games often turn quickly once they do.
Follow those three and you will understand why the crowd suddenly stands up, which is most of what you need on a first watch.
And if you miss a game, the series format is forgiving to newcomers. Because it runs to seven games over more than a week, you can join partway through and still see the ending that decides the title. There is no need to have followed the whole season to enjoy the last few nights of it.
