ChatGPT Dots Pricing: 7 Costs and Limits Made Simple

ChatGPT Dots Pricing: 7 Costs and Limits Explained Simply

ChatGPT Dots pricing is simpler than the questions people are asking, with one genuine complication. Your first dot costs nothing extra on an eligible plan. What is metered is the deeper work it does, and some of what a dot starts is billed against limits you already had. Here is the full picture, including the parts OpenAI has not published.

Updated October 2026. Dots launched on 29 September 2026 and are rolling out gradually, so check OpenAI own pages for the current position before relying on any detail here. Pricing for new products changes quickly; confirm current terms with OpenAI before committing.

1. Which plans include a dot

Dots are rolling out to Pro users in markets excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK, and to Business Premium users across all supported ChatGPT regions. Enterprise, including Edu and Healthcare, can try the beta once a workspace admin enables it, and it is turned off by default.

There is no dot on Free, Go or Plus at launch. If you are on Plus, the honest answer to whether you can get one today is no.

2. The first dot costs nothing extra

OpenAI states that your first dot is included in your Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost, and that it is available around the clock to talk and to keep track of what matters to you.

3. The allowance is for deeper work

Alongside the included dot, the plan carries an allowance for deeper work, with extended limits for the first month after launch. OpenAI has not published the size of that allowance or what exhausts it, so treat any specific figure you see elsewhere with suspicion. The extended first month is worth noting if you are judging capacity from early experience, because the baseline afterwards is lower.

4. Conversations are free, tasks are not

This is the complication worth understanding. Conversations with your dot do not count toward your ChatGPT usage limits. But when you ask your dot to start or manage tasks in Codex or ChatGPT Work, those tasks count against your usage limits as usual.

So the cost of a dot is not really the dot. It is what the dot sets in motion, and an agent that can start work on its own is an agent that can consume an allowance on its own.

5. What more capacity will look like

OpenAI says that in future you will be able to add more dots, and to scale the output of each one by either increasing its speed or the total amount of work it can take on per month. No prices have been published for either, and no date has been given.

Announced alongside dots, the new Pro 500 plan is described as the highest usage allowance OpenAI offers, at 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance, and it includes access to the Ultrafast speed tier. Ultrafast is quoted at up to 8 times faster token generation, around 300 tokens per second, in Codex, and up to 6 times in the API. If your limit is throughput rather than access, that is the relevant lever. The rest of the DevDay announcements are covered in our explainer on GPT-6 Astra.

7. What OpenAI has not published

Being explicit about the gaps is the most useful thing a pricing guide can do here:

  • The size of the included allowance for deeper work, in any unit.
  • The price of a second dot, or of extra speed or monthly capacity.
  • How much of the allowance a typical task consumes.
  • When Pro access will reach the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK.
  • Any price or licensing model for specialist dots, which are in pilot.

Before you weigh the cost, it is worth being clear about what you would use it for: our guide to dots use cases covers the jobs that are actually documented.

What ChatGPT Dots pricing actually meters

The structure is easier to reason about if you stop thinking in subscriptions and think in three buckets instead. Talking to your dot is unmetered. The deeper work it does for you comes out of an allowance included with the plan. And anything it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work is billed exactly as if you had started it yourself.

That third bucket is where ChatGPT Dots pricing stops being predictable, because a dot can start work without being asked each time. A scheduled check that opens a Codex task every morning is a standing commitment against your usage limits, not a one-off. If you are watching consumption, the number to watch is not how much you talk to the dot but how many tasks it opens elsewhere.

Questions to answer before you upgrade

If a dot is the reason you are considering a plan change, three questions settle it faster than a feature comparison:

  • Are you in an eligible market? Pro excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK at launch, so an upgrade will not produce a dot there.
  • Is your constraint access or throughput? If you already have access and the problem is speed, Pro 500 and Ultrafast address that; a dot does not.
  • Is the work you want it to do metered? Research and drafting come out of the included allowance. Codex and ChatGPT Work tasks come out of your usage limits.

One practical note on judging capacity: the extended limits apply only for the first month after launch, so early impressions of how much a dot can take on will be generous compared with the steady state.

Common questions

Is ChatGPT Dots free? Your first dot is included at no extra cost on Pro and Business Premium. Those plans are paid, so a dot is not free in the sense of being available without a subscription.

Can I get a dot on ChatGPT Plus? Not at launch. Dots are rolling out on Pro, Business Premium and, where an admin enables the beta, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare.

Do chats with my dot use up my limits? No. OpenAI says conversations with your dot do not count toward your ChatGPT usage limits.

What does count against my limits? Tasks your dot starts or manages in Codex or ChatGPT Work count as usual.

How much is a second dot? OpenAI has not published a price. It says adding more dots is planned.
