ChatGPT Dots in Slack and Microsoft Teams are the reason the product is described as working where you work rather than as another tab. The details of how that works are more specific than the pitch, and a couple of them decide whether it is usable for a team at all.

Updated October 2026. Dots launched on 29 September 2026 and are rolling out gradually, so check OpenAI own pages for the current position before relying on any detail here.

1. Where a dot can be reached

You can message or call a dot in ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile. Beyond that, OpenAI lists Slack and Microsoft Teams, with texting described as coming soon in the announcement and available as a limited beta in the Help Center. The dot can also message you with progress, questions or decisions that need you.

2. Context carries across every channel

The useful property is continuity. OpenAI says dots carry context across every channel, so a project started in ChatGPT, shared with a team in Slack and picked up again later is one thread of work rather than three. That is the difference from a chatbot integration that only knows the channel it is in.

3. Setup happens on desktop

A practical constraint catches people out. Messaging channels such as Slack or texting are connected from desktop, not from mobile, and a dot cannot be created on mobile at all. Once it exists and the channels are connected, you can message it from the mobile app.

4. A dot posts with its own identity

In a workspace, adding a dot to Slack or Microsoft Teams is its own permission, and OpenAI describes it as allowing a dot to join supported workspaces and post with its own identity, where available. Members have to complete setup after the permission is enabled, so switching it on centrally is not the last step.

The default handle of a dot is @yourname-dot, and naming it changes the handle to @yourname-agentname. In a shared channel that handle is how colleagues will see its messages, which is worth a moment thought before you name it something unhelpful.

5. The texting beta is narrower than it sounds

Texting is the most limited channel and the one with the clearest warnings. The Help Center states that it uses a third-party provider, is offered as a limited beta, is restricted to Pro users in the United States, and is not available in Business or Enterprise workspaces. Access is limited and may not reach every Pro user.

OpenAI advises caution when sharing sensitive information through text messages, and notes that message and data rates may apply. You stop outgoing texts by replying STOP, and deleting conversations and saved memories still means Reset.

6. What a dot cannot do in a channel

Two limits are documented. A dot cannot initiate a call to you at launch, so notifications arrive as messages. And it cannot have its own standalone email address at launch, though you can connect a personal email account for it to use.

If a dot is posting in shared channels, the question of what it may send and to whom becomes a governance question rather than a personal one. Our guides to dots custom rules and dots admin controls cover the two layers that decide it.

What ChatGPT Dots in Slack change about teamwork

A dot in a channel is a different proposition from a dot in a private window, and the change is not mainly about convenience. Three things follow from it.

The first is that work becomes visible. When a dot posts under its own handle, colleagues can see what it was asked and what it produced, which is a better audit trail than a private chat history nobody else can read. The second is that context arrives from the conversation rather than from you: OpenAI describes starting a project in ChatGPT, sharing context with the working team in Slack, and letting the dot follow through. The third is that the dot becomes part of a channel culture, which means the rules about what it may send matter to more people than its owner.

It is worth separating this from the other Slack integration announced the same day. Mentioning @ChatGPT in a channel, thread or direct message is a shared assistant that uses tools connected by an admin or by you, and teammates can refine results without needing their own licence. A dot is yours, carries your context and keeps working between conversations. They look similar in a channel and are not the same thing.

The wider shared surface

Dots arrived alongside several features aimed at the same problem of people and agents working on the same material. ChatGPT Space is described as a shared home where teammates, ChatGPT and your dot build on common knowledge. Pages are documents built for human and agent collaboration. Teams can delegate recurring work such as weekly project updates to shared tasks that run on a schedule or in response to events like a new email or Slack message.

The reason to mention them in a guide about channels is that they change where a dot is useful. If the shared material lives in a Space, the dot has somewhere to put work that is not a private thread, and the channel becomes the place you discuss it rather than the place everything is stored.

A note on what a channel exposes

One consequence of posting under its own handle deserves thinking about before you add a dot to a busy channel. Anything it reports arrives in front of everyone in that channel, including context it gathered from apps you connected personally. The read-only background mode cannot post on its own, but work you ask for can surface detail you would not have pasted in by hand. Deciding which channels a dot belongs in is as much an information question as a convenience one, and it sits alongside the question our guide to AI agent email permissions covers for mail.

Common questions

How do I add ChatGPT Dots in Slack? Set up messaging channels from the desktop app. In a workspace, an admin must first enable the permission that allows dots to join Slack or Teams.

Does my dot keep context between Slack and ChatGPT? Yes. OpenAI says dots carry context across every channel.

Can I text my dot? Texting is a limited beta for Pro users in the United States, using a third-party provider, and is not available in Business or Enterprise workspaces.

Can my dot phone me? No. A dot cannot initiate calls at launch, although you can call it in ChatGPT.

What name does it post under? Its default handle is @yourname-dot, which becomes @yourname-agentname once you name it.
