How to Protect Your Hearing

Mashable covered a new earplug collaboration, which is a reminder that filtered earplugs have gone from specialist kit to a fashion item. That is genuinely good news, because hearing damage is permanent and almost entirely preventable.

Here is what actually causes it, and what the numbers on the packet mean.

What gets damaged, and why it does not heal

Inside the cochlea sit rows of hair cells that convert vibration into nerve signals. Loud sound damages them mechanically, and in humans they do not regenerate.

That is the entire reason this matters more than most health advice. There is no recovery, no treatment that restores them, and the loss accumulates silently over years. High frequencies go first, which is why early damage shows up as struggling to follow conversation in a noisy room long before anything sounds quiet.

Tinnitus, the persistent ringing, is frequently the first noticeable symptom, and by then the damage has happened.

The exchange rate between volume and time

Decibels are logarithmic, which is the part that misleads people. An increase of 3dB is a doubling of sound energy, not a small change.

The widely used occupational guidance halves the safe exposure time for every 3dB increase:

  • 85dB — around 8 hours. Heavy traffic, a busy restaurant.
  • 91dB — around 2 hours. A loud bar.
  • 97dB — around 30 minutes. A nightclub.
  • 103dB — around 7 minutes. Front of a gig.
  • 109dB — under 2 minutes. Close to a speaker stack.

A three-hour concert therefore delivers, in one evening, many times a full day’s safe dose. This is why musicians and sound engineers wear protection and audiences largely do not, despite standing in the same room.

Filtered earplugs versus foam

Foam plugs work, and they are cheap and effective. Their drawback is that they attenuate unevenly, cutting high frequencies far more than low ones. Music becomes muddy and speech becomes hard to follow, which is exactly why people take them out.

Filtered or “musician’s” earplugs use an acoustic filter to reduce roughly evenly across the spectrum. The result is quieter but tonally similar, so a band still sounds like a band and you can still hold a conversation.

The protection they offer is usually more modest than foam, often in the high teens of decibels rather than the high twenties. That is fine, because the plug you actually keep in beats the better plug in your pocket.

Reading the rating honestly

NRR in the US, or SNR in Europe, is measured in laboratory conditions with a perfect fit. Real-world attenuation is commonly far lower, and regulators apply a substantial derating for that reason.

Fit is the whole game. A plug not seated properly may deliver a fraction of its rating. With foam, roll it thin, pull your ear up and back, insert, and hold while it expands. If your own voice does not sound noticeably boomy and internal, it is not in properly.

Headphones are the everyday risk

Concerts are occasional. Headphones are daily, and that is where most modern exposure accumulates.

Both iOS and Android now measure headphone exposure and will warn you, and both let you cap output volume. Turning that limit on is a thirty-second change with a permanent benefit.

Noise-cancelling headphones help in a way people miss: the reason volume creeps up is background noise, so removing the background lets you listen several decibels quieter for the same clarity.

A reasonable rule is 60 percent volume for 60 minutes, then a break. And if someone an arm’s length away can hear your music, it is too loud.
