The build-it-yourself argument is usually made on price, and price is the weakest part of the case. The real differences are what happens when something breaks, and what you can change in three years.
Where prebuilt genuinely wins
- One warranty. If the machine misbehaves, it is the manufacturer’s problem. On a self-build you diagnose which of eight components failed, then deal with that manufacturer alone.
- It is assembled and tested. No dead-on-arrival part costing you a week while a replacement ships.
- Access to scarce parts. System builders buy graphics cards in volume and can price a whole machine below what an individual pays for the card during a shortage.
- Finance and support. Instalment plans and a phone number matter more to some buyers than the last ten per cent of performance.
Where self-build genuinely wins
You choose every part, which mostly matters for the ones prebuilts economise on: the power supply, the cooler and the case. Those three are where a builder meeting a price target saves money, and they are also what determine whether the machine runs quietly and lasts.
Upgrading is the larger long-term difference. A standard case, standard motherboard and a power supply with headroom means a graphics card swap in three years is an afternoon. Prebuilts sometimes use proprietary boards, non-standard power connectors or cases with no clearance, and any of those turns a simple upgrade into a new machine.
What to check before buying a prebuilt
The specification sheet usually names the processor and graphics card and goes vague after that. The vagueness is the point, because that is where cost was removed.
- Power supply make, model and wattage. If it is unnamed, assume it is the cheapest unit that fits, and budget to replace it before upgrading the card.
- Motherboard model. Determines whether you can upgrade the processor later and how many drives you can add.
- RAM configuration. A single stick performs worse than two, and some builders ship one to leave an upgrade path.
- Case airflow. Glass fronts look better and breathe worse. Sustained performance depends on it.
- Storage type. A small fast drive plus a slow large one is common; check which your games will actually sit on.
A reasonable way to decide
If you want the machine to work and do not intend to open it, buy prebuilt from a builder who publishes full component lists. If you expect to upgrade the graphics card at least once, or you care about noise, build it — not because it is cheaper, but because you control the parts that decide those two things.
The hybrid worth considering: buy a prebuilt and replace the power supply and case fans immediately. That costs little, fixes the two most common economies, and skips the assembly.

Is building actually cheaper? Sometimes, and the margin is smaller than enthusiasts claim once you count operating system licences and your own time.
Does building void anything? No. Individual components keep their own warranties; you simply handle each claim yourself.
How hard is assembly really? Mechanically straightforward. The difficulty is diagnosis when a machine does not post, which is where prebuilt support earns its money.
Should I buy last generation? Frequently yes. The previous generation is discounted heavily at launch of the next, and that is usually where value sits.
