Receipt or invoice?

An invoice is a request for payment. A receipt is proof it was made. They look similar and carry much of the same information, but they do different jobs and you will often issue both for the same transaction: the invoice first, the receipt once it clears.

What a receipt needs

Who received the payment, who made it, the date it was paid, what it covers, and the amount. A receipt number helps if you ever need to find it again.

For cash payments a receipt matters more than usual, since there is no bank record backing it up. Both sides should keep a copy.

How this is worked out

A receipt records a payment that has already been made, so the date field is the date money changed hands rather than the date you are writing it. That distinction matters if the two fall in different tax periods.
