How to Tag Someone on Instagram

Tagging on Instagram happens in four different places and each behaves slightly differently. Knowing which one you want saves a lot of retyping, and knowing the privacy settings saves rather more than that.

Tagging in a post

1. Create the post as usual and continue to the final screen.
2. Tap Tag people.
3. Tap the photo where the person appears.
4. Search their username and select it.
5. Tap Done, then share.

This is the tag that matters. It attaches the person to the photo, notifies them, and the post can appear in their Tagged tab for anyone visiting their profile.

You can tag up to twenty accounts in a single post. Tags are invisible until someone taps the image, so they do not clutter the picture.

Tagging after posting

You are not stuck with your original choices. Open the post, tap the three dots, choose Edit, then Tag people. Add or remove as needed and save.

Editing a post does not reset its position in anyone’s feed, so this is safe to do at any point.

Mentioning in a caption or comment

Type @ followed by the username. A list appears as you type; select from it rather than typing the whole thing, because a mention only becomes a working link if it matches an existing account exactly.

A caption mention notifies the person and creates a tappable link, but it does not put the post in their Tagged tab. That is the practical difference between mentioning and tagging, and it is why a brand asking to be “tagged” usually means the photo tag rather than the caption.

Tagging in a Story

Create the Story, then either type @username as text, or use the Mention sticker from the sticker tray.

The sticker is the better option. It is unambiguous, it is clearly tappable to viewers, and it gives the person a clean one-tap route to re-share your Story to their own, which is usually the reason you tagged them.

You can shrink a mention sticker and hide it behind another sticker if you want the notification without the visual clutter. The tag still registers.

Tagging in Reels

Reels support both caption mentions and, on the final screen, a Tag people option that includes a separate collaborator field.

Adding someone as a collaborator is different from tagging them. If they accept, the Reel appears on both profiles and shares its view count and engagement across both audiences. For genuine joint content that is far more valuable than a tag, and it is the single most underused feature on the platform.

When a tag will not work

• The account is private and does not follow you. You generally cannot tag accounts with no connection to you.
• They have restricted tagging. Instagram lets people limit tags to those they follow, or block them entirely.
• They have blocked you, in which case the username simply will not appear in search.
• The username is wrong. Impersonation accounts frequently differ by one character, so pick from the dropdown rather than typing.

Controlling who can tag you

Worth setting once. Go to Settings and privacy, then Tags and mentions.

Two settings matter. Restrict tags and mentions to people you follow, which removes almost all spam tagging. And switch on Manually approve tags, so nothing reaches your Tagged tab without your say-so.

The second one is the important one. Without it, anyone can attach your profile to any image they like, and it appears publicly on your profile until you notice. Spam accounts do this at scale, and the tags are often for things you would not want your name beside.

To remove an existing tag, open the post, tap your username, and choose to remove yourself. That takes it off your profile, though the post itself remains on theirs.

While you are in the privacy settings, it is worth reviewing the other accounts you have forgotten.
